VNA Participating In National Immunization Week

VERO BEACH, Fla. (Nov. 21, 2006) – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is recognizing the week after Thanksgiving as National Influenza Vaccination Week.

This year, National Influenza Vaccination Week will run from Nov. 27 to Dec. 3. This event is designed to raise awareness of the importance of continuing influenza vaccination, as well as foster greater use of flu vaccine through the months of November, December, and beyond, according to the CDC.

The VNA Shoo the Flu clinics scheduled for this week include:

  • Nov. 24 and 25 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at The Outlets at Vero Beach, 1882 94th Dr. in Vero Beach
  • Nov. 28 from 4-7 p.m. at VNA Mobile Unit at Riverview Park in Sebastian
  • Nov. 29 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Vero Beach Community Center at 2266 14th Ave. in Vero Beach
  • Nov. 29 from 2-4 p.m. at Indian River Shores Community Center at 6001 N. A1A in Indian River Shores
  • Nov. 30 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at River House at 305 Acacia Rd. in Vero Beach
  • Nov. 30 from 1-3 p.m. at St. Marks Catholic Church, 1924 Zephyr Ave. in Ft. Pierce
  • Dec. 1 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at The Outlets at Vero Beach, 1882 94th Dr. in Vero Beach
  • Dec. 3 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at Temple Beth Shalom, 365 43rd Ave. in Vero Beach  

“Getting vaccinated is the best way to protect yourself from getting the flu,” said Allison Downing, VNA Health Services manager. “Since the flu season does not typically peak until February, November and December is a good time to receive the shot and protect yourself during the winter and holiday season.”

Influenza is a highly contagious. disease that often makes people sick enough to keep them in bed for several days. But it can also lead to more serious. illnesses like bronchitis and pneumonia. People with weakened immune systems are likely to suffer more serious effects because of the flu virus.

The VNA administers vaccinations to anyone 10 and older; flu vaccines are $28 per dose; pneumonia vaccines are $44 per dose. There is no out-of-pocket expense at time of immunization for clients who present a Medicare or Health First Medicare HMO card.
